Mirapex Victims Support
Young Onset Parkinson's Disease
It is alarming how much younger people are being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. We thought it important to add this section to the website as most people with YOPD are often treated with dopmanine agonists like Mirapex, Requip and Permax. Dopamine agonist are typically the first line of treating sympoyms in younger patients because of the severe dyskinesias which can occur after being on Sinemet (considered the "gold standard" for treating Parkinson's) for a long period of time. It is important to remember that not all people develop dyskinesia and if you are experiencing the devastating side effects of some of the dopamine agonist like Mirapex, Sinemet should probably be considered. But of course it is important to consult your neurologist on these issues. We can't stress enough how important it is if you are dxd with YOPD or RLS to see a movement disorder specialist. They are highly specialized and most are well versed on the unpublished side effects of all of these Parkinson's and RLS treatments.

Local group helps young cope with Parkinson's
While it is still the exception for someone in their 40s, 30s, or even 20s to be diagnosed with Parkinson's, it is becoming more common, said Susan Reese, director of the American Parkinson Disease Association Young Parkinson's Information and Referral Center. Of the roughly 1.5 million Americans diagnosed with the condition, about 225,000 - 15 percent - are now diagnosed before age 50, according to the National Parkinson Foundation.
